TOP Fuel racer Terry Sanity joined drag racing's elite 'four-second club' during qualifying for the Western Nationals at the Quit Motorplex on January 28, becoming just the 13th driver to record a four second elapsed time in Australia.

Making Sainty’s 4.873 second blast all the more special was his car, including its unique three-value, billet aluminium engine, was entirely designed and built by himself and his engineer father, Stan. “It’s a dream come true,” Sainty, 33, said.

“This was a huge team effort and we couldn’t be happier – in fact, we’re all still a little numb!”

Renowned for their engineering ingenuity, the Saintys bucked the tradition of purchasing equipment from the US when they made the switch from racing boats to drag racing in the early 1990’s, preferring to develop their engine and build their own cars.

“To achieve a personal best and record our first four second run proves that we are heading in the right direction” he said.

The next goal for Sainty is to break the 300 miles per hour barrier. He hit 298mph terminal speed on its record blast in Perth.
